Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 17, 2026
Tagg ("we", "our", or "the extension") is a browser extension that lets you highlight, tag, and revisit text on any webpage. This policy explains what data we collect, how we store it, and your rights.
What Data We Collect
Tagg collects only data you explicitly create:
- Tagged text — the highlighted text, the tag name you give it, and the URL of the page it was saved on
- Saved links — URLs you save through the extension's links panel
- Sync code — a randomly generated code used to identify your data across devices (no name or email attached)
- Device name — automatically detected from your browser (e.g. "Windows Chrome") and attached to tags for display purposes
What We Do NOT Collect
- Your name, email address, or any account information
- Your browsing history or pages you visit without tagging
- Any data from pages you don't interact with
- Passwords or sensitive form data
- Analytics or tracking of any kind
How Data Is Stored
Your tags and links are stored in two places:
- Locally — in your browser using Chrome's built-in storage (
chrome.storage.local). This data never leaves your device unless you choose to sync. - Cloud (optional) — if you use the sync feature, your tags are stored in Firebase Firestore (Google Cloud) under your sync code. Only someone who knows your sync code can access this data.
Sync Code & Cross-Device Access
Your sync code is a randomly generated identifier (e.g. XXXX-XXXX-XXXX) stored locally in your browser. It is never linked to your identity. Anyone who has your sync code can view your synced tags — treat it like a password and only share it with your own devices.
Third-Party Services
- Firebase / Google Cloud — used for cloud storage when sync is enabled. Subject to Google's Privacy Policy.
- Google Favicon Service — used to display website icons next to saved links. The URL of saved links is sent to Google's favicon service.
Data Retention & Deletion
Your local data can be deleted at any time from the extension panel → Settings → "Clear All Tags".
Cloud-synced data is stored under your sync code. To delete it, generate a new sync code — the old data becomes inaccessible. There is no account to delete since we don't collect personal information.
Children's Privacy
Tagg is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the extension evolves. The "last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes.
